Rolihlahla ‘Nelson’ Mandela, a South African politician and philanthropist (a philanthropist is a person who seeks to promote the welfare of others, especially by the generous donation of money to good causes.), was a strong symbol of peace. He fought for equal rights and has improved them for over 40 year. What did Nelson Mandela do to improve equality? Nelson Mandela spent nearly his entire life fighting for equality, from his early life, to his time in prison, and to his presidency, and even during his retirement. Nelson Mandela is very inspiring, a huge help against the apartheid (apartheid is a policy or system of segregation or discrimination on grounds of race.), and even helped people from around the globe after his retirement. Early Life There are many interesting facts on young Rolihlahla ‘Nelson’ Mandela including how he got the name Nelson. Rolihlahla was the birth name of the anti–apartheid, politician, philanthropist, and South Africa’s (previous) president, Nelson Mandela. Rolihlahla was born on July 18, 1918 in Mveso; a tribe located on the banks of the Mbashe River, in Transkei, South Africa. In 1930 the father of Nelson died when Nelson was only 12 years old. Mandela, back then known by Rolihlahla, was adopted by Jongintaba Dalindyebo, a high ranking Thembu regent; this of course happened after Mandela’s father died, Jongintaba began to groom Rolihlahla so he can gain a role within the tribe leadership.
